The American Red Cross
is taking donations. You can even specify where you want the donation to go.

The British Red Cross has a disaster fund, if not a special fund for the earthquake victims.

The Salvation Army is accepting monetary donations.

Convoy of Hope is already helping the earthquake and tsunami victims, and is accepting donations.

Network for Good--a collection of charities--is working to give relief to the victims of the quake and tsunami. The organizations participating are:

The Urban Rest Stop is at 1924 Ninth Avenue, Seattle, WA (Map).  A second Urban Rest Stop is planned for the first floor of the NIHI "Ballard" property - PROJECTS OF THE LOW INCOME HOUSING INSTITUTE of the Seattle area:

"The Low Income Housing Institute develops, owns and operates housing for the benefit of low-income, homeless and formerly homeless people in Washington State; advocates for just housing policies at the local and national levels; and administers a range of supportive service programs to assist those we serve in maintaining stable housing and increasing their self-sufficiency".

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome / FMS / Cancer
Here's a few new and not-so-new articles regarding the CFS/prostate-cancer retrovirus, etc. The virus is also found in females suffering from some cancers specific to women - however I don't recall if these are Uterine, Breast, Ovarian, etc. So some of the comments to the New Scientist article are a bit off the mark. Also, I seem to remember that although the mouse retrovirus studies seemed to contradict each other, the researcher did come together and reconcile their differences, and the retrovirus remains a strong apparent factor associated w/ CFS/FMS.

"Swan is dead"? - It's not what you think!
oor wullie
A friend of mine posted her appeal - to BUY LIFE! What a great concept!...

"Starting December 1 - World AIDS Day - the world's most followed celebrity Tweeters are sacrificing their digital lives to help save millions of real lives affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India.

"That means no more Twitter or Facebook updates from any of them. No more knowing where they are, what they had for dinner, or what interesting things are happening in their lives. From here on out, they're dead. Kaput. Finished.

"But they don't have to die in vain. And they don't have to stay dead for long. Just watch their Last Tweet and Testaments, and buy their lives back."

Adopt a shelter pet!
Did you know that approximately 4 million adoptable dogs & cats are killed each year due mainly to overpopulation? Did you know that 25-30% of dogs for adoption in animal shelters are purebred? The other 70-75%, of course, are lovable, wonderful mixed-breed pets, just waiting for a chance to be your perfect new friend.

Some links are for NYC area, but you can look for other branches or national orgs by searching "pet adoption" in Google. Be sure to check the credentials of the groups -- some are just classified listings, others are adoption services with many helpful extras, such as training, pet care goods, health services and so on.

Additional information that is helpful to know before rescuing an animal companion:

His finger has been rebuilt, and he will have some use of it. However...and you know what's coming...he has no health insurance. If you can only throw in a buck or two to help pay his medical bill, that'd be fabulous. Passing the word around would great, too.

HOTLINES: CLEAN-UP JOBS, BP, LIASONS - www.oilspillrecovery.org

DONATE HAIR, PANTY HOSE (lint, etc.) TO HELP SOP UP THE OIL!!! - (About hair mats)

If you have a good engineering idea as to how to stop the oil spill at the source, BP has a special hotline for that - However, I'm not sure which one it is, as of yet.

THE OIL SPILL: Donate Hair! - (Read about oats and methane).
A call has gone out to please DONATE HAIR, to be used to help sop up the BP oil making land-fall in the Gulf.  It is not yet widely appreciated, but this oil "spill" is likely to become one of the worst ecological and health disasters in history.  Please go to this link to donate hair:  http://www.matteroftrust.org/programs/hairmatsinfo.html

I'd say, if you have pets, don't be afraid to comb through your entire house and throw that in - and go for all the drier lint you can find!  Especially if it has a lot of hair and COTTON.  I'm sure that they would also want a lot of panty-hose and stockings.  And, I think it might be good to throw in a few little boxes of OATMEAL, as a hint, because I have a theory that oatmeal will help: http://madman101.livejournal.com/758245.html

Please also go to this link, to my journal post, because it discusses two big issues which may need to be confronted in dealing with this catastrophy: GLOBAL WARMING, and the MASSIVE underground deposits of dangerous METHANE.  I am hoping that, if you read about this, you may do some further research, contact relevant people, and raise these two issues into dynamic public awareness.

I also ask that, if you feel they may help, you pass the word of donating hair, panty-hose, and possibly OATMEAL and HAY.  An alternate way of plugging the oil leak is also proposed.  Thank you!

PLEASE USE LJ CUTS for most of each of your entries.

This is only fair to our readers' friends pages.

Magazine editor selling original writing to benefit homeless family
spiral, space, nebula
Hi, I’m Cristina Deptula, editor-in-chief of Synchronized Chaos Magazine (http://www.synchchaos.com) and I’m personally offering to send a piece of original poetry to anyone who sends a donation of any amount to the working, but homeless, mother and daughter mentioned in this blog (and all over the news last year.) http://my.lettersoflove.net/lettersforkaty/

I know the family personally and have built a relationship with them over time, as have many others - and they have been diligently job-searching and writing, and I’d like to see them get a break. You may check out the 17-year old daughter’s writing and graphic design here: http://destinationanywherebuthere.blogspot.com.

They're struggling due to falling between the cracks...making too much for social services and too little to rent an apartment. Also they have small dogs who've been with the family for years and who are necessary for medical reasons (waking the mom up so she can care for her daughter when she becomes sick and dizzy during the night.) Most shelters don't have facilities for pets, and shelters are often full due to the winter and the economy.

Please donate via PayPal to hugheselizabeth@rocketmail.com - they're looking for money for groceries and to be able to spend at least some nights in motels rather than their car.

Alternatively, you may mail Visa and MasterCard gift cards or cash to:

Elizabeth and Katy Hughes
PO Box 111525
Campbell, CA 95011

They apparently now have a mentor and a lead on housing and a job, but that’s in Pennsylvania (across the United States from where they are now, in California) and they need to come up with cash for the move.
Please let me know you donated, at cedeptula@sbcglobal.net, and I’ll send you a poem!

They'd also gratefully appreciate job offers, or any leads on work in the Campbell/South San Jose area. Katy's a talented writer, photographer, and graphic designer, and would love retail or any office work, or for someone to purchase art from her...and Liz has office, retail, and homeschool curriculum design experience.

Natalie, eight year old niece of someone I care about very much, has leukemia and needs bone marrow
Announcement from the family of someone I dated in college and still care about very much...his niece has cancer and needs help. Please spread the word via Facebook, Twitter, LiveJournal, etc.

Natalie is 8 years old. She has a little brother, Sean, and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

After five difficult rounds of chemotherapy last year, Natalie’s leukemia was in remission. Now it’s back and we have just weeks to find the bone marrow donor match that Natalie needs to save her life.

Natalie's greatest chance for a match is from those of ASIAN descent. Please help us spread the word through the Asian community.

To register as a potential bone marrow donor...I just did this - (free and easy, cheek swab test, kit mailed to your home and you send the swabs back in a prepaid envelope, only 1 in 200 donors will ever go through the simple outpatient procedure to give marrow to save a life) go here: http://www.dkmsamericas.org
